TSMC’s mass production of 5nm process and 2nm process in 2020 is also on the way

TSMC CFO He Limei once revealed that driven by the demand for 5G smartphones, TSMC’s 5nm manufacturing process is expected to be mass-produced in the first half of 2020. At that time, Apple’s A14 chip is expected to be the first to be adopted.

Sources from the supply chain revealed that TSMC’s initial 5nm production capacity will be covered by Apple and Huawei, and Apple will eat about 70% of the first 5nm production capacity.

Cai Lixing, co-chairman and CEO of TSMC, revealed at an investor and analyst meeting in July that TSMC’s N3 3nm process technology research and development is very smooth, and early customers have already participated to define the technology together with TSMC. 3nm will further develop in the future. Deepen TSMC’s leadership. TSMC said that it will mass-produce the 3nm process as soon as 2022.

Although the 2nm process is still in the early stage of technical planning, TSMC has already started planning. In the first half of the year, TSMC’s board of directors approved a capital allocation investment of approximately US$6.5 billion for the research and development and upgrade of new processes, new factory construction and capacity expansion, etc.

In order to develop the latest 2nm process three generations ahead, TSMC also announced a large-scale talent recruitment plan in July. According to Taiwan Electronic Times, TSMC is expected to recruit more than 3,000 new employees by the end of this year, including semiconductor equipment engineers, R&D engineers, process engineers, process integration engineers, and production line technicians.
